Remington Electric Recharable Shavers
Remington Shavers
Ever since men have had facial hair, many men have wanted to remove it. That couldn’t be truer in today’s modern society. It is uncommon today to see a man with a full beard, simply because a fully groomed man is more acceptable and fits the social standard set in today’s world. In ancient times, men relied on crude knifes and blades to get a close shave, but with modern technology also comes modern shavers, such as the Remington brand of shavers. These shavers have been in development for over fifty years and have been perfected to an exact science.
History
Remington Shavers are produced by the Remington Products Company, which was formed way back in 1816. Remington Products was originally called E. Remington and Sons, and produced and sold firearms. The company also made occasional moves into other fields, such as farm equipment and sewing machines. The company’s most significant venture into other fields came when inventor Chris Sholes persuaded the company to assist him in developing the infamous QWERTY keyboard, which is still in use today. By 1886, Remington sold the new typewriter company, which was spun off as Remington Typewriter Company. In 1927, this company merged with the Rand Kardex Corporation. As a result of the merger, the new company became Remington Rand. This newly found enterprise branched out to produce other products such as filing cabinets, office equipment, adding machines and punching card machines.
Finally, in 1937 Remington started producing what they are famous for today. Their first electric shaver was produced in 1937 and was known as the Remington Model E shaver. In 1950, the spin-off of Remington, Remington Rand, purchased the start up computer company Eckert-Mauchly Computer Company. By 1955, this new company merged with Sperry Corporation, which was a developer of the Auto-Pilot, which is used in airplanes all over the world today. This company became the Sperry Rand Corporation and continued to sell and market shavers under the Remington brand. By 1979, the Sperry Rand Corporation sold a number of its divisions, including the consumer products divisions. A businessman by the name of Victor Kiam purchased the company in a leveraged buyout.
This new company, under the leadership of Victor Kiam, became known as the Remington Products Company, the name by which we know it as today. This new company became very profitable and branched out into other markets, such as personal care appliances, personal hygiene products, and purchasing a controlling interest in Clairol’s personal care appliance business in 1994. In 1994, Kiam sold controlling interest of the company to Ike Perlmutter. Again the company was sold in 1996, when it was purchased by Vestar Capital Partners. Victor Kiam died in early 2001, and the company was again sold in 2003. This time it was purchased by battery company Rayovac. Rayovac was eventually purchased and the name was changed to Spectrum Brands. Remington Products currently is owned by Spectrum Brands and specializes in electric shavers, hair clippers, beard trimmers, make-up mirrors, hair curlers and blow dryers.
Shavers
Remington Products current and most prominent focus is on their shaver line of products. They have been producing electric shavers since 1937, and each model has been improved upon by the last. Remington currently focuses on three main product lines within the shavers division: Foil shavers, Rotary shavers, and entire cleaning systems.
Foil Shavers
Foil shavers have been around since the inception of electric shavers. Foil shavers rely on oscillating blades which are situated behind perforated foils. Foil shavers tend to provide a slightly closer shave than rotary shavers, but experts say that neither type has a distinct advantage, and it all comes down to personal preference. Remington has eleven brands of foil shavers, with the most expensive model, the F7790, comes in at around £150. The cheapest model, the Battery Operated Travel Shaver, comes in at a very cheap £15. The price disparity is caused by a number of factors – the number of foils, the number of vibrations in one minute, the style of the shaver, the type of battery, and of course the closeness and quality of the shave.
Rotary Shavers
Rotary shavers are distinctly different than foil shavers. Rotary shavers are by far the more popular type because they have been proven to provide a close shave at a relatively low price. Most rotary shavers feature three rotors that turn in opposite directions. These rotors work together to simultaneously lift hair off the face and then cut it away. Nearly all shavers will work for the flat parts of the face, but the neck and chin will pose definite challenges for cheap rotary shavers.
This is where a brand like Remington really shines – nearly the entire models feature pivoting heads to ensure the world’s closest shave, even on the chin and neck. Remington features thirteen different models of rotary electric shavers. The cheapest model comes in at just £15, but features only two rotary heads and minimal features (R91). This model is great for shaving just the face or other flat areas. The most expensive model, the F7790, comes in at £148. For this price, you would expect great features, and you certainly do receive some of the best features in the industry. This model features pivoting heads and a comfort grip to ensure you get the closest shave of your life.

Cleaning Systems
For any shaver to work properly, it needs to be clean. Cleaning your shaver can be a pain in the neck, but luckily, Remington sells cleaning systems, which do all of the hard work for you. The average price for a cleaning system from Remington is £45. The cleaning system removes debris and other dirt and hair particles from your shaver by using charged ions to attract the dirt and then flush it away. The cleaning system improves the performance of your Remington shaver to ensure it gives you the closest shave possible.
