History
Anton and Gerard Philips in the Netherlands established Philips and Co. in 1891. At first, they focused on manufacturing what consumers needed at the time: carbon-filament lamps. By the turn of the century, they had become one of the largest producers of appliances in Europe, with over two thousand employees, and became the largest single employer in the Netherlands. Philips established their first research laboratory in 1914 and began research in the fields of light bulbs and radios. By 1918, the company was attempting at diversifying their products, and introduced the medical X-Ray tube. The company patented this device and started to protect their interests in other fields too.
In 1925, the company began experimenting with televisions and radios. In 1927, Philips began producing radios, and became the world’s largest radio producer by 1932, with over one million radios sold. A year later, the company made history by producing the world’s one hundred millionth radio valve, and began production of medical X-Ray equipment in the United States. In 1939, the company again made history by producing their first electric shaver. By this time, the company was employing over forty-five thousand people around the world. During the years of WWII, science and technology made tremendous leaps and bounds. Companies like Philips took advantage of these new technologies and began producing new products. They began work on transistors and other components of electric circuits. By 1963, the company produced their first audio cassette player and their first integrated circuits in 1965.
By the 1970’s Philips had branched into multiple product sectors, such as semiconductors, lighting equipment, sound equipment, and other digital media formats. Philips began producing energy saving lamps in the 1970’s – a clear focus on their environmental conservation. The company also began work on the Compact Disc and invented the Laser Vision technology. They established their very own record label, PolyGram, in 1972. In 1983, the world witnessed history as Philips released the Compact Disc. They also produced their one hundred -millionth television set in 1984. Philips also purchased controlling shares in other technology companies such as GTE and Westinghouse’s lamps. In the 1990’s Philips made tremendous work on the DVD and other technological equipment. They also continued work on their electric shaver line, and produced their 300 millionth electric shavers in 1995. The DVD was released with the help of Sony in 1997 and instantly became a hit worldwide. Continuing into the 21st century, Philips focuses on technology, personal care products, and of course environmental conservation.
