Braun Shavers
If you’re a male, then you know the value of a great shaver.  Men’s facial hair has long been the subject of many advertising campaigns, and billions of pounds spent trying to convince men why their shavers are the best.  There are hundreds of companies that try to market their shavers to men, but only a few companies actually make a product that is worth mentioning.  One of those companies is Braun.  Braun specializes in small home appliances, especially hygienic appliances such as shavers, blenders, microwaves, toasters and others.

History
Braun was established in 1921 by a German of the name Max Braun, who was a mechanical engineer.  He setup shop in the small town of Frankfurt am Main and began producing radio sets for customers to purchase.  In 1928, the company had to move locations because it had grown too big for its starting area.  By this time, Braun was in the business of manufacturing many different types of plastics and plastic applications.

In the 1930’s, Braun was a recognized German name because of his success making and selling entire radio sets.  In 1935, the Braun brand was formed, with the stylized raised “A”, which is still used today.   By this time, Braun was employing more than one thousand people and had operations all throughout Germany.  By 1954, the company branched out from radios and began producing film slide projectors, which would become the staple product of the company for the next forty years.  By the 1950’s, Braun had also introduced the world’s first fully electric shaver, a true innovation in society.  The S50, as it was known, was the world’s first electric shaver.  It was originally designed in 1938, but production was delayed because of World War II.  This model featured an oscillating cutter block that held a very thin, but very stable steel-foil above it.  Despite the technology being nearly eighty years old, this technology is still used in many Braun shavers to this day.

By 1962, Braun was being traded publicly on many of the stock markets around the world.  In 1963, the company started to manufacture and distribute microphones in Germany.  Braun continued to perfect their pocket radios and also made large strides in the film slide projector department.  The projectors were now made from high quality optics featuring all metal construction and functionalist styling, making it easy for anyone to use.  In 1967, the Massachusetts based conglomerate Gillette Group purchased a majority of the company.

Fast forward to the 1970’s, and Braun is now focused on producing many types of home consumer appliances, such as coffee makers, shavers, razors, radios and clocks.  The slide projectors and other hi-fi products were discontinued around this time.  In 1982, a major step occurred in the process of integrating Braun into Gillette Group: Gillette Group assumed full responsibility and operations for the company and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Gillette.  In 1984, Braun ceased production of its famous cigarette lighters.  Braun continued to produce many appliances into the 1990’s, but turned its attention more to its shaver line and emphasized design and production of these products.  In 2005, Braun was sold to Proctor and Gamble and became a wholly owned subsidiary of Proctor & Gamble.

Current Shaver Products

Since the 1990’s Braun has been focusing more and more on their shaver line of products.  Braun currently has four lines of shavers, the Series 1, the Series 3, the Series 5 and the Series 7.  Series one shavers are the least expensive and offer the least features, while series seven shavers are the most expensive but make up for it with the vast amount of features they offer.  All of the shavers that Braun sells are electric, meaning you will get an extremely close shave every time.  Below is a more in-depth look at each of the Series that Braun currently produces:

Panasonic Electric Shavers and Spare Parts

Panasonic Electric Shavers and Spare Parts

Panasonic Shavers

Since the dawn of man, certain men have wanted to rid their faces of facial hair for a variety of reasons, some thought it was unsightly, others didn’t like the feel of it, while others maintained a clean shave for religious or work purposes.  For whatever reason, a clean shave requires an excellent shaver.  There are many companies that produce electric shavers, but only a few companies earn the title of producing a shaver that provides an exceptionally smooth and close shave – one of those companies is the Panasonic Corporation.  Panasonic has a very long and rich history, and their current product line features everything from electric shavers to bicycles, though we will just focus on the shavers for this particular article.

History of Panasonic

The Panasonic Corporation was founded in 1918 by Konosuke Matsushita and made their money by selling duplex lamp sockets.  By 1927, the company started producing bicycle lamps under the brand National.  During WWII, the company was operating factories throughout Japan and Asia, producing materials for the war, particularly electrical components, motors and light fixtures.  The company was partially destroyed during the end of WWII but regrouped after the war and continued right where they left off.  The company continued to supply post-war Japan with radios, bicycles and other appliances.  Matsushita’s brother in law formed the company Sanyo after the war, which would eventually become a very large competitor to Panasonic.

From 1945 to the 1980s, a major portion of Panasonic’s income came from their production of road, touring, and mountain style bicycles.  These bicycles were sold both in Japan and other parts of the world, such as the United States and Europe.  Despite pressure from competitors, Panasonic enacted a policy that all bicycles would be manufactured with the highest quality, even if it affected the bottom line.  Panasonic bicycles soon established a reputation for having great quality and being virtually indestructible.  The tires were made from thicker treads and had higher thread counts when compared to the competition.  However, by 1985, the competition had finally caught up and Panasonic slowly but steadily ceased production of the bicycle line.  By 1989, Panasonic ceased all production of bicycles because it was their lowest profit item in the warehouse.

Panasonic began producing consumer electronics in 1961.  The owner and CEO travelled to the United States to meet with American dealers and producers.  Panasonic began producing television sets to be sold in the United States and to parts of Europe by 1979.  In addition to television sets, Panasonic also sold hi-fidelity radios, short wave radios, and marine radio direction finders which are often used by fishermen to help map out large lakes.  The company also branched out into the home appliance market by producing rice cookers that are used by large amounts of the Asian population.

Panasonic continued to improve their technology and research into the 1980s.  They began producing electric shavers at this time and also began production on Compact Discs and CDs.  Their most famous product to date came out at this time: the SL-1200 record player, which was known world-wide for its precision, high performance and durability.  In 2004, Panasonic was selected by Toyota to provide them with batteries for their Prius line of cars.  On November 3rd, 2008 Panasonic merged with Sanyo to become the largest corporation in Japan and one of the world’s largest corporations.

Shaver Features

Panasonic has been manufacturing electric rechargeable shavers for over fifty years, and has perfected the manufacturing process to produce some of the best and highest quality shavers in the world.  Below are some of the common features that you will see on just about every Panasonic model:

  • Adjustable pivoting head – This pivoting head system follows every contour of your face to allow for a very close shave with maximum comfort that leaves you with a smooth, clean shave.
  • Sharp blades – Panasonic has utilized nanotechnology to create the sharpest blades in existence.  The blade is angled at just thirty degrees, which increases sharpness and enables a whole new world of smooth.  Other shavers have blades that are angled anywhere from forty-five to ninety degrees, which doesn’t guarantee a smooth shave.
  • Fastest shaver –Panasonic shavers are designed to run at near astronomical speeds – in excess of 13000 RPM.  These shavers are the fastest in the world and are designed to power through even the thickest and most courses of beards.
  • Turbo cleaning mode – For those extra thick patches of hair, the motor will kick into overdrive and will run at 17,000 RPM.  While doing this, the shaver will also slow down the blade movement to save on the shaver itself.  This removes excess build up of residue on the blades, leaving it clean and fresh and available to perform another close shave.
  • Wet/dry modes – The shaver is able to be used in both wet and dry environments.  This means you can unplug it and take it anywhere, even fully underwater, such as in the shower or the bath.  This makes it one of the most convenient shavers on the market.
  • Triple blade system – With three floating blades all moving at over 13,000 RPM, you are guaranteed to get the closest shave of your live with the Panasonic shavers.
  • Centre slit blade – The centre slit blade is in addition to the three blades that are running at 13,000 RPM.  The centre slit blade is designed to remove long and thick hairs that the other blades may miss.
  • Pop-up trimmer – Use this trimmer for removing annoying ear and nose hair.  Also can be used to quickly touch up your sideburns or moustache.  The trimmer is easy to activate and even easier to use.
  • Quick charging – many shavers today feature batteries that only last minutes but take hours to charge.  Panasonic shavers are the exact opposite: on a full charge they can last hours and you can perform a quick charge in five minutes to provide enough power for one clean, accurate shaver.  Full charging only takes an hour compared to some of the competition that takes three to four hours.

Philips and Philishave Electric Recharable Shavers

Philips and Philishave Electric Recharable Shavers

Philips (Philishave) Shavers

It is a fact of life that men require shavers to stay clean and well groomed.  There are many companies that sell shavers, but only a few that sell shavers that are good enough to be trusted and used around the world.  One of these companies is Philips, which is a home appliance and personal grooming company.  Read on to learn more about the history of Philips and their product line, especially their shavers.

History

Anton and Gerard Philips in the Netherlands established Philips and Co. in 1891.  At first, they focused on manufacturing what consumers needed at the time: carbon-filament lamps.  By the turn of the century, they had become one of the largest producers of appliances in Europe, with over two thousand employees, and became the largest single employer in the Netherlands.  Philips established their first research laboratory in 1914 and began research in the fields of light bulbs and radios.  By 1918, the company was attempting at diversifying their products, and introduced the medical X-Ray tube.  The company patented this device and started to protect their interests in other fields too.

In 1925, the company began experimenting with televisions and radios.  In 1927, Philips began producing radios, and became the world’s largest radio producer by 1932, with over one million radios sold.  A year later, the company made history by producing the world’s one hundred millionth radio valve, and began production of medical X-Ray equipment in the United States.  In 1939, the company again made history by producing their first electric shaver.  By this time, the company was employing over forty-five thousand people around the world.  During the years of WWII, science and technology made tremendous leaps and bounds.  Companies like Philips took advantage of these new technologies and began producing new products.  They began work on transistors and other components of electric circuits.  By 1963, the company produced their first audio cassette player and their first integrated circuits in 1965.

By the 1970’s Philips had branched into multiple product sectors, such as semiconductors, lighting equipment, sound equipment, and other digital media formats.  Philips began producing energy saving lamps in the 1970’s – a clear focus on their environmental conservation.  The company also began work on the Compact Disc and invented the Laser Vision technology.  They established their very own record label, PolyGram, in 1972.  In 1983, the world witnessed history as Philips released the Compact Disc.  They also produced their one hundred -millionth television set in 1984.  Philips also purchased controlling shares in other technology companies such as GTE and Westinghouse’s lamps.  In the 1990’s Philips made tremendous work on the DVD and other technological equipment.  They also continued work on their electric shaver line, and produced their 300 millionth electric shavers in 1995.  The DVD was released with the help of Sony in 1997 and instantly became a hit worldwide.  Continuing into the 21st century, Philips focuses on technology, personal care products, and of course environmental conservation.

Current Shaver Line

Philips currently has hundreds of models of both electric shavers and manual shavers that they produce.  Below are some of the main electric shaver product lines:

Remington Electric Recharable Shavers

Remington Electric Recharable Shavers

Remington Shavers

Ever since men have had facial hair, many men have wanted to remove it.  That couldn’t be truer in today’s modern society.  It is uncommon today to see a man with a full beard, simply because a fully groomed man is more acceptable and fits the social standard set in today’s world.  In ancient times, men relied on crude knifes and blades to get a close shave, but with modern technology also comes modern shavers, such as the Remington brand of shavers.  These shavers have been in development for over fifty years and have been perfected to an exact science.

History

Remington Shavers are produced by the Remington Products Company, which was formed way back in 1816.  Remington Products was originally called E. Remington and Sons, and produced and sold firearms.  The company also made occasional moves into other fields, such as farm equipment and sewing machines.  The company’s most significant venture into other fields came when inventor Chris Sholes persuaded the company to assist him in developing the infamous QWERTY keyboard, which is still in use today.  By 1886, Remington sold the new typewriter company, which was spun off as Remington Typewriter Company.  In 1927, this company merged with the Rand Kardex Corporation.  As a result of the merger, the new company became Remington Rand.  This newly found enterprise branched out to produce other products such as filing cabinets, office equipment, adding machines and punching card machines.

Finally, in 1937 Remington started producing what they are famous for today.  Their first electric shaver was produced in 1937 and was known as the Remington Model E shaver.  In 1950, the spin-off of Remington, Remington Rand, purchased the start up computer company Eckert-Mauchly Computer Company.  By 1955, this new company merged with Sperry Corporation, which was a developer of the Auto-Pilot, which is used in airplanes all over the world today.  This company became the Sperry Rand Corporation and continued to sell and market shavers under the Remington brand.  By 1979, the Sperry Rand Corporation sold a number of its divisions, including the consumer products divisions.  A businessman by the name of Victor Kiam purchased the company in a leveraged buyout.

This new company, under the leadership of Victor Kiam, became known as the Remington Products Company, the name by which we know it as today.  This new company became very profitable and branched out into other markets, such as personal care appliances, personal hygiene products, and purchasing a controlling interest in Clairol’s personal care appliance business in 1994.  In 1994, Kiam sold controlling interest of the company to Ike Perlmutter.  Again the company was sold in 1996, when it was purchased by Vestar Capital Partners.  Victor Kiam died in early 2001, and the company was again sold in 2003.  This time it was purchased by battery company Rayovac.  Rayovac was eventually purchased and the name was changed to Spectrum Brands.  Remington Products currently is owned by Spectrum Brands and specializes in electric shavers, hair clippers, beard trimmers, make-up mirrors, hair curlers and blow dryers.

Shavers

Remington Products current and most prominent focus is on their shaver line of products.  They have been producing electric shavers since 1937, and each model has been improved upon by the last.  Remington currently focuses on three main product lines within the shavers division: Foil shavers, Rotary shavers, and entire cleaning systems.

Foil Shavers

Foil shavers have been around since the inception of electric shavers.  Foil shavers rely on oscillating blades which are situated behind perforated foils.  Foil shavers tend to provide a slightly closer shave than rotary shavers, but experts say that neither type has a distinct advantage, and it all comes down to personal preference.  Remington has eleven brands of foil shavers, with the most expensive model, the F7790, comes in at around £150.  The cheapest model, the Battery Operated Travel Shaver, comes in at a very cheap £15.  The price disparity is caused by a number of factors – the number of foils, the number of vibrations in one minute, the style of the shaver, the type of battery, and of course the closeness and quality of the shave.

Rotary Shavers

Rotary shavers are distinctly different than foil shavers.  Rotary shavers are by far the more popular type because they have been proven to provide a close shave at a relatively low price.  Most rotary shavers feature three rotors that turn in opposite directions.  These rotors work together to simultaneously lift hair off the face and then cut it away.  Nearly all shavers will work for the flat parts of the face, but the neck and chin will pose definite challenges for cheap rotary shavers.

This is where a brand like Remington really shines – nearly the entire models feature pivoting heads to ensure the world’s closest shave, even on the chin and neck.  Remington features thirteen different models of rotary electric shavers.  The cheapest model comes in at just £15, but features only two rotary heads and minimal features (R91).  This model is great for shaving just the face or other flat areas.  The most expensive model, the F7790, comes in at £148.  For this price, you would expect great features, and you certainly do receive some of the best features in the industry.  This model features pivoting heads and a comfort grip to ensure you get the closest shave of your life.

  • Titanium coated triple foils – 300% harder than Steel foils for a long-lasting, excellent cutting performance
  • Flex & Pivot technology
  • Digital display showing charging time
  • Mains/Rechargeable from 110v - 240v
  • 60 minutes usage time
  • 5 min quick charge
  • 2 hour charging time
  • 4-position slide up trimmer (off, lock, intercept, trim)
  • Washable
  • Automatic worldwide voltage

Cleaning Systems

For any shaver to work properly, it needs to be clean.  Cleaning your shaver can be a pain in the neck, but luckily, Remington sells cleaning systems, which do all of the hard work for you.  The average price for a cleaning system from Remington is £45.  The cleaning system removes debris and other dirt and hair particles from your shaver by using charged ions to attract the dirt and then flush it away.  The cleaning system improves the performance of your Remington shaver to ensure it gives you the closest shave possible.
